Victorian Gold-Filled Black Enamel Mourning Locket

He was loved, you know.

When he died, someone took the time to weave his hair into a piece of art and carried it with them, kept him close to their heart until they, too, inevitably passed on.

How many times did they run their thumb over the black enamel?

We don’t know. We may never know.

We don’t even know his name.

Before you is a gold-filled Victorian mourning locket is from the 1880s, or thereabouts, in black enamel. “In memory of” is engraved on the face. It measures 1.5″ from base to tip of the jump ring, and contains a portrait of the deceased on one side and a plait of his hair on the other.

This little piece of art is engraved with the initials “LC”, if my squinting and pondering is correct.
